Promote with Pinterest for Small Business

Did you know that Pinterest can help you promote your business?  This was actually news to me as well until I took a Pinterest workshop, hosted by Delightfully Social.  As a side note, you should attend EVERY free workshop on Social Media that you can find.  There are a ton of them out there.  And if you don’t have time to do this, find a Social Media Manager who can and does


Pinning is a bit time consuming, which is why I do recommend the use of a Social Media Manager.  But it can be worth it.  Your Pinterest page can be a portal for customer contact and increased sales.  Pinterest is one of the fastest growing social media, with growth of 97% last year.  More and more people are using Pinterest, and more are making decisions about  purchases using Pinterest.  They are using them to plan life events, finding brands that fit those dreams and goals and then moving on to the buying stage.  Getting your brand and your products in front of this growing audience is exactly why you need a Business Pinterest Page.

To Promote with Pinterest you need to follow a few steps:

  1.  Register a Business Page on Pinterest.  Pinterest offers special analytical tools and pages for Businesses.
  2. Make sure you fill out your profile COMPLETELY.  SEO for Pinterest means optimizing the information you provide as well as the NAMING you use for your username, your boards and any original pins you decide to create.   Above all, make sure you include a link to the website or page that you want your new customers to end up at!
  3. Following Other Brands, Pinners and Boards will jumpstart you on finding Pins and help you start defining what you want to share with your potential customers.  Search for companies or businesses like yours, see what they offer on their Pinterest Page and adjust yours to fit you and your business.
  4. Boards of your own is probably the first difficult step.  How should you categorize your boards?  The workshop I attended suggested that you should choose 10 words or ideas that you want people to associate with your business.  Then create 10 boards each labeled with a word or idea.  You also want to be specific.  If your business promotes a healthy lifestyle, don’t just label one of your boards “Healthy Lifestyle”.  You want to make a board for “Healthy Recipes” or “Exercises for Personal Well Being” or “Healthy Habits”.  Be as specific as possible so that your customer will find YOUR board and not someone else’s.
  5. Now add Pins to your boards!  You can “repin” from the brands, pinners and boards from step 5.  You can also add pins by the URL of a website or article.  Or upload images of product or graphics about services from your computer.  Screen Shot 2016-04-18 at 11.29.34 AM
  6. What makes a GOOD pin?  You want to optimize your graphics, make sure the content you are sharing is not dated (no sales or promotions or products that are one time only), and you want to make sure that you include descriptions on your pins.


Setting up and optimizing your Pinterest page is just the beginning.  Rich Pins allow you to pin something original without risking someone else repinning it and changing the description or caption.  These include Apps, Movies, Recipes, Articles, Products and Places.  This does involve knowing and understanding some computer coding.  You can also pay to advertise with Promoted Pins.  

It’s up to you if you take the step into Rich or Promoted Pins.  I recommend that you first set up and develop your Business board.  Keep it fresh by adding and deleting pins at least once a week, maintaining at least a dozen pins in each of your boards.  As your business develops, so should your Pinterest Boards.  The more specific you make your pins and boards, the more likely the ideal customers will find you.  They’ll include your brand in their boards about their dreams and goals.  When they’re ready to buy, your pin will be one of the ones they use to make their purchase.

I had an amazing entrepreneur experience last night. This post is for Military Spouses in particular because it’s about a resource that’s available to YOU for free. Especially if you want to own or run your own business.

Not everyone is cut out for entrepreneurship. If you have certain personality traits or critical thinking skills your goal of having your own business and being a success will come easier.

They have a ton of resources for military spouses like resume building and career counseling but the tool I’m most excited about is the Entrepreneur EDGE assessment. This is a tool used by career advisors and human resource departments everywhere. It normally costs $50!!! But through SECO, it’s FREE!!!

What it does is assess whether you’re cut out to be an entrepreneur! You get a full report on how your perceptions of career and life as well as your exposure to business may have shaped you to be a savvy business owner or if it may be more of a struggle for you.

To get this free assessment, you need to get access through SECO. At the SECO website, search for the EDGE assessment. It’ll give you instructions to call Military OneSource. They make you go through them to make sure you’re a military spouse on your Service Members page 2. It’s one of our benefits of being married to a service member! From there they’ll transfer you to a Career Counselor. This is where you need to be clear and ask to be emailed the Entrepreneur EDGe assessment link and code. I actually had to call back a few times because neither the career counselor or I had any idea of what to do. And that’s why I’m posting this, to save YOU time.

It’ll take about 20 minutes on the phone and then about 20 minutes to do the assessment and get your report. It’s totally worth it though. I felt much more confident about my future success as an entrepreneur when I saw my results. And I saved $50 by using my resources!

Reaction to Facebook’s new REACTION Buttons

The reactions to Facebooks new REACTION buttons seem to be one of excitement and, based on my personal friends’ posts, an overall positive one.


I personally am thrilled to have one more way that people can interact with each other. Facebook stated in a post of their own that they’ve “been listening to people and know that there should be more ways to easily and quickly express how something you see in News Feed makes you feel”.  The old LIKE button is still available, but the action of “liking” something isn’t very “social”.  Posts make us feel all sorts of emotions, and as business owners, you want to reach out for heartstrings or tickle a funny bone to get noticed in a customer’s facebook wall.

The release of the REACTION button is good news for those who promote their business or products on Facebook.  Marketplace was quick to remind us in a post this morning that they covered the development of the REACTION buttons months ago.  In an interview with Wally Krantz of Landor, Marketplace reported that “Facebook users will be more inclined to respond if they have a richer way to express themselves.”  This means that your business page posts may soon be getting much more feedback in the form of reaction responses.  As long as consumers utilize this new feature, you’ll start seeing exactly how your customers feel about your business posts.

Hello World

It’s more than a little intimidating, starting a new blog.  It’s even MORE intimidating starting a business from the ground up.  I have a personal business goal of helping Small Business Owners get the most of the Social Media tools available to them.  This blog will be a reflection of my own struggles and successes as a Small Business.  The silver lining of being at the bottom of the ladder is that I will have experience to share with those businesses that I’ll be helping.

I plan to document the processes of becoming a business, of developing my business plan and the growth as a Social Media consultant and manager.  Information on becoming a business hasn’t been easy for me to find.  It’s either way easier than I think it is, or its too complicated and boring for others to document.

So if you’re interested in watching me grow as a Small Business Owner or wish to know more about Social Media and its uses, hang around.  Hopefully we’ll both learn something.
